FABULOUS SANTA BARBARA SPOT – SALT

The Story: In this hustle and bustle world, I needed something to help me relax… I avoided the obvious vices and put my ear to the ground.  Rumor had it that Santa Barbara was on the cutting edge with all things holistic yet again: Salt.  Salt touted a “unique underground salt cave experience.”  It was supposedly calming, healing, and held a myriad of benefits.  I was a bit skeptical; however, I’m always open to being proven wrong, so I decided to check it out.

The Place: State Street is the main street in Santa Barbara and it’s always full of shoppers, tourists, and locals meandering with bags, cameras, and Starbucks in hand, respectively.  Amidst the madness of downtown, there is a door with a simple sign reading “Salt.”  This door opens to a story of stairs leading to a basement.  Many things come to mind with the word “basement,” none of which are true for Salt.  Upon entering this underground world, you are met with a soft amber glow and a salt haven of sorts {they sell everything from cooking aids to skin softeners}.  Many of their consumer goods held my interest; I ended up purchasing a crystal-like salt lamp {it releases negative ions to raise seratonin levels and purify the air}, a salt bath bar, and Sole {a mineral drink containg the 84 minerals & trace elements that your body is made up of}. After shopping, I decided to move forward with their “Salt Cave Experience,” something that I knew very little about.  I was simultaneously excited, trepidatious, and skeptical before it began.
*Tip: If you stop by, ask for Sara.  She gave me a tour, helped me navigate the world of Salt {she’s incredibly knowledgable about their products and services}, and put me at ease before entering the cave.

The Experience: It was time to enter the salt cave.  Sara walked me {and my sister!} to the door.  The door opened to a gorgeous rose gold cave.  Sara informed us that the cave was crafted from 45 tons of pure Himalayan salt and that the salt was over 250 million years old and had been completely isolated from exposure to impurities; this salt contains all of the minerals and trace elements found in the human body.  The microclimate is kept at 72 degrees and 40% humidity. In Eastern Europe, salt caves have been considered a healing experience for everything from respiratory to skin conditions.  Sara also let me know that salt therapy promotes stress reduction.  I was sold.  Time to give this cave a try.  We settled into our zero gravity chairs and wrapped up in a cozy blanket.  The next hour was simply spent relaxing and breathing; fine salt particles were released into the air at this time to allow greater absorption of the healing qualities and trace elements contained in the salt.  Calming music {called solfeggio frequency} played during this time.  I don’t know what I expected by the end of the hour, but I left feeling simultaneously exhilirated and at peace.  The salt caves were the ideal environment to spend an hour in perfect calm.  I don’t know if it was my mind playing tricks on me or if it really was the salt {I think it was the salt!}, but I had more energy the rest of the day than I had experienced in a long time… and the feeling of peace stayed with me for a few days.  The bottom line is that I would do it again in a heartbeat {and I have every intention of going back soon}; the ability to find complete calm that easily is invaluable!

The Details: Cave sessions are $25 an hour.  You can reserve a cave for group events.  Salt also offers the Salt-Sational Himalayan Salt Scrub and Massage {90 minutes for $155}, Nexneuro Vibration Treatment {starting at $20 for 20 minutes}, and a Scent-Sationally Therapeautifc Massage {60 minutes for $95}.  Salt is located at 740 State Street in Santa Barbara, California.  You can reach them at 805.963.SALT or check out their website.

FABULOUS SANTA BARBARA SPOT – FARMER’S MARKET

Though I’ve featured the Farmer’s Market before {here}, I couldn’t resist sharing some of my new snapshots {all taken with bunches of sweet smelling Farmer’s Market roses anchored in my arms}. Maybe it’s the fact that I view summer {my very favorite season} and the Farmer’s Market as synonymous.  Maybe it’s the people watching. Maybe it’s the feeling of community. Maybe it’s the flowers {I always purchase heaps of them}. Whatever it is, it cannot be missed.

  • FABULOUS SANTA BARBARA SPOT – SALON PATINE FOR HAIR EXTENSIONS

FABULOUS SANTA BARBARA SPOT – SALON PATINE FOR HAIR EXTENSIONS

The Story: I’ve had hair extensions on and off for the past four years.  I have always viewed my hair extensions as an accessory… an enhancement… and something that made me feel a lot sexier.  I absolutely love having extensions, but I have been frustrated with the chemicals or hair damage involved in the process.  My favorite salon in Santa Barbara, Salon Patine {you can read about my absolute love for them here}, just began offering hair extensions and they claimed the process was the least damaging available, involved no chemicals or glue, and told me that the hair was reusable.  I knew I had to give it a shot…

The Hair Artist: Maria, the hair extension artist at Salon Patine, is everything a girl could hope for in a stylist.  She is fun, professional, upbeat, and exceptionally good at what she does.  She took an intensive hands-on course to become certified to apply the extensions; the course also involved instruction on how to properly cut the extensions into a hairstyle of your choosing {something that many people who offer hair extensions are not educated in}.  The best thing about Maria is that she practices what she preaches: she wears the exact same hair extensions that she applies.  Maria never had an interest in wearing hair extensions until she saw these specific extensions at a hair show and knew that if she thought she needed to have them, then so would other women.  I immediately adored her.

The Process: I had my hair highlighted at Salon Patine on a Tuesday by Sarah {I wouldn’t trust my color to anyone else}.  Immediately after the highlighting process was finished, Sarah and Maria {the Hair Extension Artist} discussed exactly what colors should be ordered for my hair extensions.  The beauty of having your extensions done at Salon Patine is that your Color Artist and your Hair Extension Artist work side by side to make sure you have the perfect color match.  I went back to Salon Patine on Thursday {they can overnight the hair!} with my natural hair freshly washed and product-free.  The no-heat, no-chemical process {it involves a light aluminum bond clamped close to the scalp} was painless {and seeing instant results made me giddy!}.  Note on the aluminum bonds: copper bonds are available, but they can turn green on blondes! That’s why Maria makes sure to use only aluminum.  Maria’s sweet demeanor helped make the three hour process pass swiftly.  She is a perfectionist {which is exactly what a client should be looking for in a hairstylist}, so she made sure that each and every bond was comfortable and fell in a natural way that worked with my hair.  After all of the bonds were in place, Maria expertly cut {I wanted long layers} and styled my hair.  I was hooked.

The Details: Maria will ask you whether you are targeting body or length.  She’ll install the extensions within 3 hours.  After that, you’ll need to maintain your extensions by getting the bonds moved back near the scalp every two months.  The hair is reusable {which helps to keep costs down}!  You can treat it exactly like your real hair; you can curl it, flatiron it, and brush it {you should use an extension brush}.  I also like using dry shampoo between washes to give my roots some lift.  If I’m in the water or going to sleep, I put it in a braid to keep the hair in great condition.  If you want to feel sexier and have more options when styling your hair, you need to try these extensions {you’ll get addicted}.  Salon Patine is located at 3206 State Street.  Visit the Salon Patine website here.  Book your appointment by calling 805.898.1133.  Don’t hesitate.  You’re three hours away from a more captivating version of yourself. Let them know that Kiki sent you!

  • FABULOUS SANTA BARBARA SPOT – SALON PATINE

FABULOUS SANTA BARBARA SPOT – SALON PATINE

Salon Patine is one of my best kept secrets {clearly, not anymore}.  I won’t trust my hair {highlights, haircuts, trims, blow drying, and styling} to anyone/anywhere else.  The hairdressers at the salon are professional, fun, and make sure that your hair is exactlythe way you want it to be done.  And, unlike other salons where the owners aren’t stylists, you can find the owners Rob {a hair cutting guru… I can thank him for my recent long layers} and Sarah {I wouldn’t let another person in the world highlight my hair} behind a chair cutting, coloring, or interacting with clients.  It is the culture of Salon Patine {in addition to the high quality of work} that sets this salon apart.  I actually look forward to the hours that I will spend in the chair at this salon… I am always greeted warmly, offered a hot cup of amazing coffee {I always say “Yes.  I’ll take my coffee black, please”… immediately upon walking in… I blame my affinity for early morning appointments}, and then caught up {willingly and with much anticipation} in the swirl of the salon.  It is hard to describe the experience to one who hasn’t been here… because this place is one-of-a-kind.  Imagine a room full of engaging personalities, artists, and friends… that is just the beginning of Salon Patine.  The paint colors on the wall change frequently, as do their featured artists.  This salon is a community that is worth being a part of… it’s a huge bonus that your hair will look utterly fabulous when you walk out their doors.

Local Tip: Salon Patine oftentimes throws events at their salon after hours or on weekends.  Don’t miss out, as these events are definitely worth attending.  Check out their website {here} for upcoming events.

  • MUST HAVES – THE NIGHT OUT APPLICATION

MUST HAVES – THE NIGHT OUT APPLICATION

I heard about a smart-phone application called Night Out.  I checked out their website and they claimed that they “give you up-to-the-minute information based on location, including deals, happy hours, events & more” and that they “give you an assortment of unique deals from your favorite places right around you.”  I decided to put the application to the test and thought I would use it to plan a girls’ afternoon/night out…

    httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FooRU1hcIWE

Earlier in the afternoon, I had looked through the Night Out application on my iPhone to find some fun activities {and good deals!} for my girlfriends and me.  All I did was click the Night Out app, selected the “Deals” tab and… bam!… 55% off of two tastings and a free bottle of wine for only $25 {at one of my favorite tasting rooms, Kalyra}.  Purchased! Off to a good start…

We had such an incredible time wine tasting, that we decided to keep the night going.  I used the Night Out Happy Hour tab.  It shows you all of the Happy Hours in your vicinity {I think everyone is aware of my overwhelming love of all Happy Hours}… we picked one within walking distance and definitely made the right choice.  Enterprise Fish Co. has an incredible Happy Hour {and their calamari was to die for}.

After wine, calamari, shrimp quesadillas, and way too much laughter… the girls and I decided to finish off the night with… even more food.  I clicked the “Deals” tab once more and was pleasantly surprised that one of my favorite restaurants, Milk & Honey, was offering a free dessert deal.  Sold.

Final Thoughts: I highly recommend downloading this application.  It’s location specific {they’re adding new cities constantly}, keeps you in the loop as to local deals, happy hours, and events, AND it saves you money {without making it look like you’re trying to save money… you just look tech savvy}.  Download the application asap.  Here’s a link to sign up for free: http://nightout.com/get-started/blonder
